Parent's Guide: 3 Injury-Prevention Tips for Kids Returning to Sports

With the return of school comes the return of kids activities. Many of our children haven't participated in their usual sports over the summer. So how do we ensure that they return in September without causing injury?

We asked Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist Tamara for her 3 top tips:

  1. Gradually increase the volume (how much they are doing) and intensity (how hard they are doing it). We know that rapid increases in activity can lead to overuse injuries.
  2. Warmup and cool down well. These should be sports specific to prepare your body appropriately for the sport. A good cool down helps to kick start the recovery process.
  3. Recovery and fuelling. One of the most important parts of performance and remaining injury free is ensuring you get enough sleep and fuelling well. If you have increased your activity level since returning to school, you need to increase how much you eat too!

We have a team of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists at ReformPhysio & Pilates, Albyn Terrace, Aberdeen on hand to provide assessment and treatment if your child is experiencing any injuries or niggles as they return to sport.
